Sun Protection: That Certain Something

Nothing feels better than the warm sun on your skin. But as good as it feels, we all know how damaging it can be. The damaging affects of the sun add up over time. That sunburn you got as a kid, could lead to skin cancer later in life. Dermatologists say most of our exposure to sun occurs before we reach our 18th birthday. You need to protect yourself from the sun year round, not just during the summer, at the beach or on sunny days. The suns UV rays can reach you on cloudy and hazy days too. And they'll reflect off any surface like water, cement, sand and snow. Try limiting the time you're outside between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, that's when the sun's rays are most damaging. Everyone knows you need to wear sunscreen. But you need to use one with an SPF of at least 15 or more each and every day. You can get sunscreens in a bunch of different forms, lotions, gels and sprays. There are also sunscreens made for specific purposes like sensitive skin or babies. Check the sunscreens expiration date. It only has a shelf life of three years. Make sure to reapply it often and use enough. Most of us use it too sparingly. What you wear is also important. A loose fitting long-sleeve shirt and long pants made of tightly woven fabric offer the best protection. Find a hat that gives you some shade for your head and neck. And for your eyes, sunglasses with UV protection. There's no such thing as a safe tan. The rays from tanning beds are just as damaging as those from the sun. If you really want that tan, try using one of the self tanners on the market today. Many of them have sunscreen in them, letting you get that glow while still protecting you. Giving you that certain something you're looking for.
