Laughter: That Certain Something

Have you ever wondered about why things make your laugh? Why do you find something funny and other people don't? Believe it or not, the study of laughter is giving us some interesting insight. Human beings love to laugh and the average adult laughs 17 times a day. What may surprise you even more is the fact that researchers estimate that laughing 100 times is equal to ten minutes on the rowing machine, or 15 minutes on the exercise bike. When we laugh, our blood pressure is lower. Laughter also gives your diaphragm and abdominal, respiratory, facial, leg and back muscles a workout. That's why you often feel exhausted after a long bout of laughter. You have just had an aerobic workout. So how do you add more laughter to your life? It's really pretty easy if you put your mind to it. First of all, figure out what makes you laugh and do it or read it or watch it more often. Second, surround yourself with funny people. Develop your own sense of humor. Maybe even take a class to learn how to be a better comic or at least a better joke teller at the next party. Finally, just appreciate the importance of laughter. Researchers say the most powerful thing we are given is the ability to laugh, especially if we can laugh at ourselves and not take ourselves so seriously. So go ahead, laugh a little bit today.
